Stop the shoulds. Turn inwards for answers.
Listening to all the shoulds just blows up your to do list exponentially. Refocus yourself, and tune within for your answers.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Those are often the words of doing one thing, but wishing or being told that another action would’ve been a better choice.
How often have you been plagued and bludgeoned by the shoulds? Has that ever blown up your to do list?
You SHOULD do this!
Oh, you SHOULD'VE done that instead.
You SHOULD definitely not do that,
…but SHOULD do this instead.
The internet AND the people around you have endless (sometimes unsolicited) advice to share in regards to how you SHOULD and SHOULDN'T live your life, do in your relationship, run your business, parent your kids/pets, make the best investments, etc.
Recently, the shoulds stormed my mind and created additional chaos in my life.
“I should have everything figured out by now.”
“I should've done more.”
“I should/shouldn't be doing all this.”
All this judgment rained on me, and the weight of it could’ve been paralyzing.
As an entrepreneur (maybe even just as a human in general in this modern world), I’m constantly facing all the decisions, options, and advice available. It felt like information overload and encountering decision fatigue.
Here's an excerpt from my blog:
HERE’S THE BRUTAL TRUTH
I was subjecting myself to all of this. There is a limitless amount of information and options out there. More and more are being created by the seconds. I chose to get overwhelmed by chasing for more information, listening to too many voices, and being influenced by it all.
The shoulds will always be there, but it's MY choice on how to filter them, listen to the ones that resonate with me, and discard the rest.
As a result, I called a time out.
…THEN I TURN FOR ANSWERS WITHIN
I went within to figure out what the hell is going on with me. I can’t keep on doing this… All these shoulds were burying me!
I could sense that my motivations weren’t in the right space. I felt like I was just doing things because other people told me so. I started feeling dread doing things that should’ve just flowed out of me.
Trying to figure out the “right” answer isn’t always an easy choice. Sometimes I don’t know if it’s the right choice or not until… after the fact. I could only trust what my inner wisdom guides me to do at that moment. Even with all the knowledge in the world, research, and fact gathering, they can only take me so far.
Because ultimately, it’s my choice to make and I have to take responsibility for the results I get.
Read the full post to see how I was able to turn within for answers and put a stop to the shoulds plaguing my mind leveraging these 4 techniques.
Shed the shoulds, and tune within to be who you’re meant to be.
